Treating people with Importance, Respect, and Kindness should not be reserved for “Special” days…
What if every day we treated people like it was their birthday.
Called them up, sent a nice message, acknowledged them, took them to coffee or lunch, gave a smile and/or a compliment…
How would it be if our words and actions reflected that we cared about whether or not they felt important and valued!
Challenge: Pick a person, and for an entire week really treat them special, as if it was genuinely their birthday. Do this full-heartedly, but don’t mention the challenge to them or others. The Honor Challenge
Note: This is not necessarily about material gifts but a frame of mind, words, and actions (outreach.)
It’s important to think of how this will affect people make sure your words and actions are appropriate for the relationship you have with them. You also could discuss the week with the person afterwards tell them everything was genuine but sparked by this challenge, and then get their feedback, and maybe encourage them to try it with someone.
I wonder how relationships and/or self-esteem will be affected…
The idea is to change our state of mind. To impact how we think about and interact with the people in our lives, and to have more connected relationships.

“It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. We are made to live together because of the interrelated structure of reality. Did you ever stop to think that you can’t leave for your job in the morning without being dependent on most of the world? You get up in the morning and go to the bathroom and reach over for the sponge, and that’s handed to you by a Pacific islander. You reach for a bar of soap, and that’s given to you at the hands of a Frenchman. And then you go into the kitchen to drink your coffee for the morning, and that’s poured into your cup by a South American. And maybe you want tea: that’s poured into your cup by a Chinese. Or maybe you’re desirous of having cocoa for breakfast, and that’s poured into your cup by a West African. And then you reach over for your toast, and that’s given to you at the hands of an English-speaking farmer, not to mention the baker. This is a great book if you want a deeper level of understanding of Dr. King’s spirit, and his intentions in the Civil Rights Movement.
Create a Healthy Environment:
Surround yourself with people who are positive and/or who love and care for you.
Rid your life of toxic people; people who make you feel bad about yourself, or who make you feel sad often, people who stress you out, people who take but do not give back, etc.
Do what you Love:
Find one thing (at least) that you love doing and are passionate about, and start doing it again regularly; baking, reading, a sport, fishing, playing cards, journaling, dancing, etc.
You don’t have to be good at it, just love doing it and do it often.
Try to find the Humor in things:
Laugh at your mistakes, be silly, watch good old fashioned comedy (try watching I Love Lucy,) and don’t take yourself too seriously.
Do whatever you can to get yourself to smile and hopefully even laugh now and then, so you don’t forget what it feels like.
Talk it Out:
Find someone you can talk to, who is a good listener; a Therapist, a Mentor, a trusted love one, etc.
Meet with them regularly to talk, whether it is professionally or a weekly coffee date.
Impact Someone else’s Life for the Better:
Volunteer at a shelter, teach Sunday school, become a big brother/sister (or something similar, e.g. fostering) to a child or a mentor (officially or unofficially,) rescue an animal, pay it forward, etc.
You’ll be surprised at how much it impacts and helps you as well.
It doesn’t have to be huge, just find something you can do to make a difference.
Hopefully these things will momentarily make you happier,
and over time help you to become a more joy-filled person.
